There is something appealing about the idea of a born writer.

Someone who possesses a mysterious gift. Someone for whom words arrive naturally, characters emerge fully formed, and stories seem to write themselves.

We have never found that image particularly convincing.

Talent undoubtedly exists.

So does imagination. Some people are naturally drawn to language, stories, or the observation of human behavior.

But an inclination is not the same thing as an accomplishment.

A spark may show you a direction.

It does not carry you to the destination.

Writing a novel involves thousands of decisions, and many of them have little to do with inspiration.

A character may need to be reconsidered. A sequence of events may prove implausible. A chapter may contain beautiful sentences but fail to move the story forward.

Research may expose a mistake. Revision may reveal that something essential has been missing for hundreds of pages.

None of this means that the original idea was worthless.

It means that the idea must become a finished work.

We believe this is where much of the writer's development takes place.

Not in the first exciting moments of invention, but in the less glamorous process of examining, questioning, rewriting, and improving.

Writing together also means recognizing that an idea can benefit from another perspective.

A story is not necessarily stronger because its authors agree about everything. Sometimes the most useful question is the one that challenges an assumption.

The reader encounters the final text.

The reader does not see all the alternatives that were considered, the passages that disappeared, or the countless choices that led to a particular sentence.

And that is as it should be.

The purpose of the work is not to demonstrate how difficult writing can be.

It is to create something worth reading.

This is why we believe writers are made rather than simply born.

Whatever natural ability a person begins with, writing remains a craft that must be developed.

And perhaps that is the most encouraging part of the entire process.
